In a paper in the Cell Press journal One Earth, Jim Best and colleague Steve Darby show how multiple stresses are challenging the functioning of the world’s great rivers, and emphasize how it is essential to understand the timescales on which these stressors operate. The paper highlights how many of these stresses act on a shorter time scale than climate change induced stresses, and that these must be prioritized in ongoing management strategies and efforts to meet some of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
